Learning Across Cultures
Volunteer English Conversation Partner — ENGin | 2024–Present
The Connection
Through ENGin, I was paired with a student in Ukraine for weekly English conversations. I planned our sessions, chose discussion topics, and looked for ways to make each conversation useful and comfortable.
More Than Language
I initially thought my role would simply be helping someone practice English. I quickly realized that the learning went both ways. Our conversations became opportunities to share our schools, traditions, daily lives, and cultures.
Over time, our sessions grew beyond conversation practice. I helped with writing and English essays, while she introduced me to Ukrainian traditions, perspectives, and experiences that were completely new to me.
What I’m Learning
ENGin has taught me that good teaching begins with listening. Every conversation is different, so I’ve learned to adapt how I explain ideas, ask questions, and give feedback based on what will be most helpful in that moment.
“English became more than a language—it became a way to build connection.”
Why It Matters
Language can do more than help people communicate. It can create relationships between people whose everyday lives may look very different, making unfamiliar places and experiences into something more personal and human.
