Exploring Medicine
SLU Summer Scholars & Clinical Shadowing & Hospital Intern | 2025 - Present

The Experience

My interest in medicine has grown through opportunities to see healthcare from multiple perspectives—inside simulation and anatomy labs, through conversations with healthcare professionals, and during clinical shadowing.

SLU Summer Scholars

Through the SLU Summer Scholars program, I participated in simulation, ultrasound, and cadaver labs while learning from physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals about their paths into medicine.

I also completed research projects exploring major depressive disorder, Alexa Irene Canady, and neuroplasticity following traumatic brain injury.

Clinical Shadowing & Hospital Intern

At SSM Health, I have shadowed neurosurgeon Dr. Victor Williams during outpatient consultations, inpatient rounds, and surgical procedures. I observed procedures including carpal tunnel surgery and decompressive laminectomy, gaining a closer view of how physicians combine technical decision-making with communication and patient care.

What I’m Learning

These experiences have helped me understand that medicine is not only about knowing the science. It also requires careful observation, communication, humility, and an ability to support patients and families through uncertainty.

Why It Matters

I’m especially drawn to medicine because it brings together several things I care about: scientific problem-solving, research, human connection, and the opportunity to improve care over time.
