From Question to Experiment
STEM Independent Study — Danforth Plant Science Center | 2024–2025
The Question
How can careful experimentation reveal which plant varieties are better suited to drought conditions?
The Work
During tenth grade, I participated in an independent study focused on drought resistance in different varieties of millet. I helped plant and maintain crops, control growing conditions, photograph growth, examine leaf structures, and manage collected data.
What I Learned
This project introduced me to the full experimental process—from forming a research question and controlling variables to analyzing patterns and interpreting results. It taught me that useful information is often hidden in small differences that only become visible through careful observation.
“This was my first experience seeing how careful observation could uncover patterns that weren’t obvious at first.”
Why It Matters
Research can connect detailed scientific questions to much larger challenges. Studying drought-resistant crops showed me how experimental science can contribute to questions involving climate resilience, agriculture, and food security.
