Gender Equity in Research & Design
Lead Youth Ambassador — iGiant

The Question

How can research, design, and organizations better account for differences that affect women’s health, safety, and experience?

My Role

As Lead Youth Ambassador at iGiant, I work with youth ambassadors from around the world to organize research-focused roundtables, develop presentations, contribute to articles, recruit new ambassadors, and participate in work examining gender equity across organizations and industries.

The Work

My work has exposed me to the ways gender can influence areas that may initially seem purely technical—from medical research to the design of protective equipment. Through roundtables, writing, and research, I’ve learned to look more closely at whose needs are considered when products, studies, and systems are designed.

I have also participated in evaluating organizations on their demonstrated commitment to gender equity and continue exploring sex- and gender-related questions in precision medicine.

Publication

I co-authored “One Size Fits None: Inequities for Women in Protective Personal Equipment,” published in the Journal of Women’s Health. The article examines gender-related inequities in protective equipment across healthcare, military, and space environments.

Why It Matters

Something can appear to be designed for everyone while still failing to account for meaningful differences in the people who use it. This work has shown me that inclusion is not simply about representation—it can influence safety, effectiveness, and the quality of research itself.

“Science is not only about discovery. It is also about who and what we consider along the way.”

What I’m Learning

iGiant has taught me to approach science and design with a more questioning lens: Who was included? Who was considered? What assumptions shaped the process? Those questions now influence how I approach research far beyond gender equity.
